Having never been through this before I honestly had no idea what would/should happen; & planning funeral services is just not something you want to stress over. If additional copies are needed in the future, they can be obtained for a fee from the Department of State.

Recently we came to visit and everything friends and family had left was gone. We went to the office and were told items that were deemed worth saving were out by a fence and if we wanted we could go see if they were still there. We were taken out to a fence at the back of the cemetery where we literally had to dig through objects from other graves to try and find everything. It was explained to us that once a year the cemetery is cleaned so that it will not look trashy. That technically no one is supposed to put anything on a grave.
When a U.S. citizen in Germany passes away, the German authorities will immediately seek to inform any next-of-kin in Germany of that person’s death and offer their assistance. The fastest and least expensive way to pay funeral fees is usually to wire the funds directly to the German funeral home via Western Union or to complete an international bank transfer. Absolutely recommend - a very beautiful and serene location and a great staff. This is the cost to purchase a burial vault from the funeral home. A burial vault is required for most cemeteries, but you may choose to purchase one online or elsewhere, if you'd wish. Prices are estimates and are only intended to provide directional information.

In the almost two years that we have been coming to visit our grandson's resting place nothing like this has ever been done. At the very least, some sort of notification or posting would have been appreciated. So while I give Curlew 5 stars for all the planning and handling of the service, I have to give them a 1 star for this situation.
